Class Description

Belly dance is body-size-positive. You are not limited by your size to achieve graceful, fun, and feminine movements. By studying belly dance students get a fully enjoyable dance lesson, and discover at the end they have also had a fully enjoyable workout. Will this help you lose weight? That is up to your body type, it will help you gain strength and flexibility.

Beginning/Basics Class

You will learn the basic moves and rhythms that make up "belly dance." Different dance styles will be explored and explained. Techniques for dancing with finger cymbals "zills" and a variety of dance props will be included. Dance props include veil, dance cane and balancing trays or swords. This class is age appropriate for tweens and teens, as well as adults. Students will need to supply own zills and veil. Some items will be for sale during class, or to purchase on your own visit the Resource page for vendors.

American Styles Belly Dance

Americans have a unique way of taking from the various cultures of the world and creating something completely new, yet with full reference, credit, and thanks to the original art form. American night-club or caboret style first started developing in the 1970s. It is a very grounded earthy, yet fully feminine style. It incorporates more undulations and has "goosh." American Tribal Style, a fully unique fusion of world dances and belly dance, originated in San Franciscoin the late 1980s and has lead to the evolution of tribal fusion and urban tribal styles. This is a very dignified and grounded dance form with a strict dance vocabulary of moves. In this class you will learn foundations and basic moves from both styles.

Modern Egyptian Belly Dance

This is the "high glamour" style of belly dance. Moves are smaller, more delicate, emphasis is on sharpness and quality of the move rather than size and speed of the move. Historical folkloric moves are learned to help gain further understanding on the evolution of the style
